As a general rule of thumb, I do not keep junk food in the house. I have no self control when there is a bucket of ice cream in my freezer and I will devour the entire pint in 24 hours. Rather than making myself sick on sweets, I stock up on stevia & raw cacao and go from there.
Because pre-made treats so rarely live in my kitchen, (and because my sweet tooth is that of a toddler’s), I have learned to get creative with my pantry staples. In fact, I consider myself the queen of makeshift desserts. Clean, simple, and often sugar free, I can satisfy my cravings with only health enhancing ingredients.
Below is my recipe for healthy ‘Nutella‘. Sweetened with stevia, it is considerably more bitter than the standard chocolate spread. Personally, I love dark chocolate and can eat this dip as is. Paired with fruit, the natural sweetness breaks through the chocolate and the combination is absolutely divine. If you are looking for a sweeter spread, simply add maple syrup to taste!
Healthy Hazelnut Chocolate Spread
Makes roughly 1/2 cup
2 tbsp nut butter – I am obsessed with Nutzo; while it is a bit expensive, it has the absolute best texture of any nut butter I have tried. Additionally, it has hazelnuts and that is the vibe we are going for.
2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
2 tsp cacao powder
dash of sea salt
2-3 drops of liquid stevia
1 tsp vanilla extract
maple syrup to taste (optional for a sweeter spread)
- Stir all ingredients together. That’s it!
Enjoy with fruit, toast, or on its own! If you would like your spread to have a thicker consistency, simply chill the mixture until firm. Not too long, or it will completely harden. (Still delicious, just not dippable.)
